Step 2: Removing The Spark Plug Wire
Once you have located the spark plug, you need to change it; the next step is removing the spark plug wire. You can gently pull on the wire until it pops off the spark plug. If the wire is stuck, you can try twisting it back and forth before pulling. Be careful not to damage the wire or pull too hard, as this could cause the wire to break. Once you remove the wire, you should see the end of the spark plug.
Step 3: Remove The Coil On Plug
The next thing you need to do is remove the coil on the plug. Removing the coil is vital, as the coil-on-plug helps deliver voltage to the spark plugs. Without it, the spark plugs will not be able to function correctly. First, locate the coil pack to remove the coil on the plug. It will be located near the engine and have a cluster of wires attached to it.
Now, use a wrench or socket to loosen the bolts that hold the coil pack. Once the bolts are loose, carefully pull the coil pack away from the engine. Be sure to disconnect any wiring attached to the coil pack before removing it completely. With the coil pack removed, you will be able to access the spark plugs and change them as needed.
Step 4: Remove The Old Spark Plug
The fourth step in changing your spark plugs is removing the old spark plugs. You will need a socket wrench and a spark plug socket to do this. To start:
- Use the socket wrench to loosen the retaining nut. Once the retaining nut is loose, you can remove the spark plug socket and pull out the old spark plug.
- Be careful not to drop the old spark plug, as it may be damaged and not work correctly.
- Repeat this process for each of the spark plugs.
Step 5: Install The New Spark Plugs
The fifth and final step in changing your spark plugs is installing the new ones. To do this:
- Take the new spark plug and insert it into the spark plug socket.
- Use the socket wrench to tighten the retaining nut.
- Be sure not to overtighten the nut, as this could damage the threads on the spark plug. Once the retaining nut is tight, you can reattach the coil on the plug and reconnect any disconnected wiring.
Finally, replace the air filter (if applicable) and close the hood of your car. Once everything is back in place, you can start your car and see how it runs. Your car should run smoother with new spark plugs and have better fuel economy.
